Things to see in Alcalá del Júcar
A castle above the rock, cave houses and streets leading down to the river. Discover one of Albacete’s most striking landscapes.
The place
A village climbing the gorge
Alcalá del Júcar rises in tiers along the hillside, with its castle at the top and the river below. Cross the bridge and look back at the white houses to begin exploring the village and its close relationship with the rock.
A walk through the town links steep lanes, homes carved into the hillside, the church of San Andrés and spaces beside the water. Each stretch offers another view of the valley and a different part of local heritage.
What to see
Three essential stops

Alcalá Castle
The fortress has Islamic origins and overlooks the village. From above, you can see the bend in the Júcar and the houses on the hillside.

Cave houses
The caves carved into the rock show a way of living distinctive to Alcalá. Some can be visited in the historic centre.

Streets, church and river
Walk among whitewashed houses to the church of San Andrés, then head for the bridge and riverbank to see the village from below.
Plan your visit
From the bridge to the castle
Begin beside the Júcar and cross the bridge to take in the view. Climb the streets of the historic centre, visit one of the caves and continue to the castle. On the way down, the houses and valley look different again.
Round off your visit with a riverside walk or a trip to Jorquera. Check opening times and entry conditions for monuments and caves before planning your route.
